Project Manager Position Available

Mount Ida Press, established in 1985, publishes books on architecture and history and an international journal on historic-preservation technology. We also conduct research on historic structures; recent projects have included the Statue of Liberty, Cincinnati Union Terminal, and the Rotunda at the University of Virginia. We are a small, fast-paced company located near the Capitol in Albany.

The Position

The project manager will oversee editing, production, and strategic planning for the APT Bulletin: The Journal of Preservation Technology, which is published three times a year and, through JSTOR, has readers in 115 countries. He or she will also have various responsibilities related to the publication of corporate and institutional histories and books on the history of architecture and construction. The project manager will also participate in historical-research projects, using both online library and manuscript databases and collections at archives and libraries.

The project manager will work with the president and the research and editorial coordinator on other tasks and projects, including the updating of the companyís website. Administrative tasks will include communicating with clients and authors, filing, and keying edits.


The successful candidate will have at least two years of experience editing, copyediting, and proofreading nonfiction manuscripts for books and articles, preferably in the fields of history, architecture, engineering, construction, historic preservation, or related fields.

Excellent writing, word-processing, and other communication skills, as well as Internet research experience, are required. The project manager must be able to assume responsibility and be comfortable with the stress of deadlines. Professional telephone and email demeanor and the ability to work well with other organizations, clients, and consultants are essential. He or she will be resourceful, exceptionally well organized, detail oriented, meticulous, computer savvy, and quick to learn. He or she will be able to switch gears quickly and manage multiple tasks and competing priorities.

A bachelorís degree and professional work experience are required; a masterís degree would be an asset. An academic background in history, architectural or art history, historic preservation, material culture, English, or a related field is preferred. Experience with historic preservation, building construction, and using original source materials, such as manuscript collections, would be important additional assets. This position has regular weekday hours and a benefits package. Salary level will be based upon skills and experience.
